How to Track Your Brand's Visibility in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity
Your customers are asking ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for recommendations, but no analytics dashboard shows you what those assistants say about your brand. To manage AI visibility, you first have to measure it. Here is a practical method any marketing team can run.
Step 1: Build Your Prompt Set
List 25 to 100 prompts that real buyers might ask at different stages:
- Category discovery: "best digital marketing agency in Dubai", "top logistics companies in Oman".
- Problem-led: "how do I get my clinic found online in Abu Dhabi?"
- Comparison: "[your brand] vs [competitor]", "alternatives to [competitor]".
- Brand: "what is [your brand]?", "is [your brand] reliable?"
- Arabic equivalents for GCC audiences.
Use Search Console queries, sales call notes and People Also Ask boxes for inspiration, and keep the set fixed so results are comparable month to month.
Step 2: Choose Platforms
At minimum: ChatGPT (with search), Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. Each draws on different indexes and sources, so results differ.
Step 3: Define Your Metrics
| Metric | What it measures |
|---|---|
| Mention rate | % of prompts where your brand is named in the answer |
| Citation rate | % of prompts where your website is linked as a source |
| Position | Where you appear in a recommendation list (first, top three, later) |
| Accuracy | Whether facts about you (services, location, pricing) are correct |
| Sentiment | Whether the description is positive, neutral or negative |
| Share of voice | Your mentions divided by all brand mentions across the prompt set |
Step 4: Run the Tests Properly
- Use logged-out or fresh sessions where possible to reduce personalization.
- Set or simulate the target location (for example, the UAE) because answers are often localized.
- Run each prompt at least three times. AI answers are non-deterministic, so record how often you appear.
- Save the full answer and the cited sources, not just a yes or no.
Step 5: Analyse Sources, Not Just Mentions
The most useful output is the list of sources AI platforms cite for your category. Those are the directories, publications, review sites and competitor pages shaping the answers. Getting your brand onto those sources is often the fastest way to improve visibility.
Step 6: Connect to Business Outcomes
- In GA4, create a channel group or exploration for referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com.
- Add "How did you hear about us?" to forms, with an option for AI assistants.
- Watch branded search impressions in Search Console. AI mentions often lead to brand searches.
Tools vs Manual Tracking
Manual tracking in a spreadsheet works for 25 to 50 prompts and teaches you a lot about how each platform behaves. As the prompt set grows, dedicated AI visibility tools can automate runs across platforms and locations. Whichever you use, keep the prompt set and method consistent.
Reporting Template
A monthly AI visibility report should show: overall mention and citation rate by platform, share of voice against three to five competitors, the prompts gained and lost, top cited sources in your category, accuracy issues found, and actions for next month.
